The US Business Registry Landscape
Unlike the UK's centralised Companies House, the United States has a decentralised business registry system. Each of the 50 states maintains its own business registry, administered by the Secretary of State (or equivalent). A Delaware LLC, a California corporation, and a Texas partnership are each registered in their respective state's registry, with no single federal registry covering all US businesses.
The EIN as the Federal Anchor
The Employer Identification Number (EIN), issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), is the closest thing to a federal business identifier in the United States. Every US business with employees, and most businesses that file federal tax returns, has an EIN. AI Verified uses the EIN as the primary federal anchor for US business identity, supplemented by the state registration number.
State Registration Numbers as Secondary Anchors
Each state's Secretary of State assigns a unique registration number to businesses registered in that state. AI Verified supports state registration numbers as secondary anchors, allowing US businesses to establish a complete identity that includes both their federal EIN and their state registration number.
Verification for US Businesses
Silver tier ($19/month) provides EIN-anchored verification with optional state registration number. Gold tier ($99/month) adds citation monitoring. The US market is AI Verified's largest addressable market, with over 30 million registered businesses.
