Search Engine Land is measuring how often brands appear in AI answers. That measurement is useful. It is not the same as knowing who the business is.
That line is from “top of funnel content worth it.” Keep the figure inside the source. What the figure does not settle is identity.
Retrieval is cheap. Identity is not.
Answer engines ground on pages they can parse quickly. Review sites and busy forums win that race. A contractor’s WordPress theme does not. When the model cannot resolve the business, it guesses — or it names someone else.
A third-party public file with a stable URL gives the model a second source that does not change when a plugin updates. Put the seal on the site you control so people and machines land on the same record.
Do not buy a promised number-one slot in ChatGPT. Publish evidence. Then measure citations against that file, not against a slogan.
