AI tools recommend brands and cite someone else

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Aug. 27, 2026 — Answer engines increasingly name a brand and then send the reader somewhere else. That split is no longer an anecdote. It is in the data.

Search Engine Journal senior news writer Matt G. Southern reported this week that AI tools “often recommend brands while citing other websites as the source.” His account of Shero Commerce’s analysis is the record this dispatch is answering, not a study we commissioned.

Shero reviewed purchasing questions across 60 product categories and collected 1,851 cited sources from Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Brand-owned pages were 2.8 percent of those citations. Third-party sites — including consumer publications such as Good Housekeeping, Verywell Fit, and Reviewed.com — accounted for the largest share, 59 percent in Shero’s grouping.

The same pattern held when a model named a brand out loud. Shero counted 159 brand recommendations. The brand’s own page was cited in 31 percent of those cases. Southern’s example is specific: ChatGPT and Perplexity recommended Gymshark, Alo, and Beyond Yoga for squat-proof leggings, then pointed at other sites.

“For ecommerce brands, being recommended and being cited are two separate outcomes,” Southern wrote. “One brand may be highlighted in an AI buying answer, while another site might receive the source link.”

That sentence is the news. Ranking packages that promise a number-one slot inside ChatGPT treat recommendation and citation as the same event. They are not.

AI Verified does not sell that promise. The registry publishes a hashed public identity record — name, place, evidence, and a stable URL — so a system that needs a third-party page has something cleaner to read than a bloated storefront. Gold, at $297 a year, adds domain attestation and optional government-registry fields. It does not purchase a citation.

Shero did not test whether original copy, structured identity, or a third-party passport changes citation share. Southern said so. The honest next sentence is therefore limited: the gap is measured. The cause is not.

What is already measured for small businesses is a different gap. Wikidata and Wikipedia remove most SME pages for lack of notability. Directories rent the top of a category. Review networks can be gamed. None of those systems were built to give answer engines a single, dated, source-backed identity document.

AI Verified’s public registry now holds tens of thousands of Type A classified records. Type A means a business already shows a consistent public footprint — typically a Google Business Profile with name, address or service area, phone, and website. Bronze is the free public packaging of that observation. Gold is the paid attestation layer.

Operators who read Southern’s piece and then look for a “ChatGPT rank” product are shopping for the wrong object. The object in the Shero tables is the cited URL. If that URL is someone else’s magazine, the brand that was named still lost the click.

About AI Verified
AI Verified is a selective public identity registry operated by LinkDaddy LLC. It classifies Type A businesses, publishes Bronze public records at no charge, and offers Gold attestation at $297 per year. It is not a government agency, not an open directory, and not a guaranteed placement in any answer engine.

Does AI Verified guarantee a ChatGPT citation?
No. Search Engine Journal and Shero Commerce measured a citation gap. They did not prove a method that forces citation. AI Verified publishes a public identity record. Each answer engine decides what to cite.

Who reported the underlying study?
Matt G. Southern, senior news writer at Search Engine Journal, reporting Shero Commerce’s analysis of 1,851 citations across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
