CLEARWATER, Fla. — Aug. 28, 2026 — When an answer engine names a local business, it still prefers someone else’s page. That is the finding of BrightLocal’s latest citation audit, published Aug. 26, and it is the record this dispatch is answering.

BrightLocal reviewed 1.9 million citations across 116,670 domains. Google Business Profile accounted for 28.5 percent of those citations. Yelp accounted for 8.53 percent and was the most-used source inside ChatGPT results. Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode leaned on Google.com (GBP) for 108,018 citations, then Yelp for 12,194. Facebook, Tripadvisor, MapQuest, OpenTable and BBB followed.

“High authority directories and platforms lead all local AI search result sources,” BrightLocal wrote. The firm added that GBP “is the source of choice for Google’s own AIs” and that Yelp’s weight inside ChatGPT “is no surprise given their partnership.”

Those numbers describe where models currently go. They do not describe whether the named business has an attested identity file, a government registry link, or a domain the owner can prove. A Yelp listing can be paid-promoted. A Maps pin can be stale. A directory page can sell the same lead fifteen times. Citation volume is not verification.

AI Verified treats that gap as the product. Type A classification is an observed public record — name, address or service area, phone, website, Place ID — not an open scrape of every pin on the map. Gold is a $297-a-year attested file: domain control, cryptographic hash, public JSON at a stable URL. The file is built for machines that would rather read structured identity than parse a bloated directory template.

BrightLocal is right that NAP consistency and a claimed Google Business Profile still matter. The missing layer is a third-party record that says what the listing is, what it is not, and when the evidence last changed. Until that layer exists at scale, AI Overviews will keep citing the loudest directory — not the business that can prove it is the same legal entity tomorrow.

What did BrightLocal measure in August 2026?
BrightLocal audited 1.9 million local AI citations across 116,670 domains and found Google Business Profile and major directories dominate AI Overview and ChatGPT sourcing.

Does a directory citation prove a business is verified?
No. Citation volume shows where models currently retrieve. It does not attest domain control, government registry identity, or an unchanged public file.

What does AI Verified add to GBP and Yelp?
A selective Type A public record and, for Gold, a $297-a-year attested JSON file at a stable hash URL built for answer engines.
