Google and Yelp still feed local AI citations, BrightLocal finds

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Aug. 28, 2026 — BrightLocal reported that Google Business Profile and Yelp still sit behind a large share of the pages local AI answers cite.

That is not a surprise to anyone who has watched Maps and review sites feed both classic search and the new answer boxes. It is a reminder. The first pages a model can parse for a plumber in a city are often the same pages Google already ranked.

What BrightLocal actually measured

BrightLocal studies local search for a living. The latest cut looks at which third-party sources appear when AI products answer local questions. Google’s own business profile and Yelp remain near the front of that list. Newer “AI visibility” microsites do not replace them overnight.

AI Verified did not commission the research and does not restate every cell in BrightLocal’s tables. The newsroom point is narrower: the pages models already trust for local facts are profiles, not brand essays.

A map pin is not a verified identity

A complete Google listing is still required work. Hours, photos, categories, and a matching phone number still matter. None of that is the same as a public identity file that states who controls the website, which government number was supplied, and when the evidence was last dated.

Those facts do not live in a star rating. A five-star profile can belong to a firm that no longer answers the phone. A three-star profile can belong to the firm that actually holds the license. Stars are not identity.

What a local firm should do with the finding

Do not abandon Google Business Profile. Do not abandon Yelp if customers already write there. Add a third object the model can fetch when those two sources disagree or go stale: a dated public record with the legal name, the site, and the phone.

Keep the three objects honest. Pretending one replaces the others is how firms get surprised when an answer box names the right trade and the wrong number.
