A review directory is a list. A public identity file is a record.

Yelp and Angi get cited in AI answers because they hold millions of structured local records: name, address, category, reviews, hours. That corpus has been crawled for years. That is corpus weight. It is not proof that a promoted listing is a verified identity.

Inside those products, paid upgrades can change sort order, unlock a logo, or push a card. That is marketplace merchandising. It is how those companies make money. It is not why an answer engine knows the restaurant exists.

A public identity file does a different job. It states the legal entity, the site the owner controls, and the evidence date. It does not sell the inbound call to a stack of competitors. It does not rank workmanship. Gold on AI Verified is $297 a year after the owner proves the website.

Owners who want reviews should still collect reviews. Owners who want map-pack presence should still keep Google Business Profile accurate. Those layers do not replace a file that exists after Wikipedia will not keep the firm.
