Wikipedia and Wikidata inclusion standards and business records

Encyclopedia projects need independent coverage. A public business file is a different object with a different bar.

Wikipedia’s company guideline is blunt: significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the company. A homepage does not count. A paid wire does not count. A directory row does not count.

Wikidata is looser than Wikipedia and still not a yellow-pages. Items without sources get deleted. Items that exist only to promote a firm get deleted.

Two bars, two products

Encyclopedia bar: notability. Registry bar: can we observe a Type A firm, and did the owner later prove the site? Mixing the bars is how owners waste a weekend and then buy a GEO package out of spite.

How a business record should talk to those projects

Cite them when they exist. Do not impersonate them. Do not stuff a sameAs to a Wikipedia article that was never written. The file on this site is allowed to be boring. Boring is how you stay true.

If I get press, do I qualify for Wikipedia?
Only if the press is independent and significant. Most vendor wires fail that test.

Does a Gold file count as a reliable source for Wikipedia?
Treat it as a primary source about the firm. Primary sources do not create notability.
