How Mention Check asks, and why DataForSEO
Small businesses do not need a vendor logo. They need to know who asked the engines, what was asked, and why the number can move tomorrow.
Who DataForSEO is
DataForSEO sells structured search and AI-answer data to other software companies. Your customer never sees their website. We send them a target (your name, your domain, or a spoken question). They return JSON: the prompt, the model’s answer, and any source URLs attached that run. Platforms in the feed we use: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews.
We chose them because (1) we already pay them for Google Maps Place IDs on Type A records — one audit trail; (2) the payload is documents we can store, not a private “visibility index”; (3) live response endpoints exist when we need to ask a question that is not already in their corpus. We did not choose them because they are “more accurate than ChatGPT.” Nobody is. They are the meter.
What “accurate” means here
Accurate = we recorded the answer that came back, with the sources they attached. Inaccurate would be turning that into “you rank #4 in AI.” Same question, next day, different names — that is the engine, not a bug in the meter. Mentioned, recommended, and sourced are three different flags. Named without a link is not the same as cited.
The eight spoken questions
Built from legal name, category, city, region. Not “{city} {category}” as a Google keyword. Example for a Miami roofer:
